I went shooting on the Saint Joseph south pier one evening to get some
images of the north lighthouse bathed in warm twilight. The night was
unseasonably warm, however, and both piers were dotted with people. Unable
to get a clean shot of the lighthouse, I looked down the pier and noticed
this couple talking and enjoying the sunset. As the sun disappeared, they
just keep talking. Eventually, the pier cleared of everyone but myself and
this couple. This image was one of many I was able to capture, this one
coming about 15-20 minutes after the sun had set. As the couple bonded, I
realized nature's twilight was bonding with us all.

To expose this picture, I took a reading of the
orange sky and reduced it by one stop to ensure that the couple would render
as a silhouette. In Photoshop I adjusted the levels to clean up the blacks,
boosted saturation by 10, and applied a standard amount of sharpening. The
only tricky part, timing the exposure so that the pier light would appear
illuminated in the final picture.
