My wife, Sarah, forms a bond of trust and
security with each of her patients. It is a critical first step in the
therapy she provides. The bond she has with this boy, a patient of many
years, is especially strong. Watching them interact, it is easy to see how
they have befriended each other along the way. This day's journey, a simple
five mile nature hike, reminds me of their larger journey towards his health
and well-being. This journey has lasted more than five years now, and will
likely continue long after the next five years. I have taken several images
of these two the last few years, but none have captured this theme better.
Technical Details: 1/160 sec at f/5.6 - 18-200mm lens
at 70mm - cloudy white balance +3 - RAW ISO 400
This image was a perfect candidate for matrix metering - tones were evenly
distributed and the contrast was naturally compressed by the soft light from
the tree canopy and overcast sky. With my camera on aperture priority, I
simply set an aperture of f/5.6 and let the camera choose the appropriate
shutter speed. The only pixelroom modifications were an application of a
standard amount of sharpening and vibrance.
