I'm not a boating fan. In that I mean I enjoy
sailing, but not with enough passion to make the commitment required to own
my own boat. However, I love taking pictures of boats and their
surroundings. Here, the busy, erratic contrails provided a nice contrast to
the graceful progress of the sailboat. This boat was heading back to port
after what I imagine was a good sail. Apropos, as this was one of my last
shots I took before I headed in for the day.
Technical Details: 1/125 sec at f/9 - 300mm lens - cloudy
white balance +3 - RAW ISO 100
To expose this picture, I spot metered the
medium orange part of the sky and set an exposure 2/3's of a stop under the
meter indicated value to ensure the sailboat would record as a silhouette.
In Photoshop, I adjusted the levels and saturation by small amounts and then
added a standard amount of sharpening. For pictures like these where the
aperture setting really doesn't matter, I typically choose a middle value,
like f/8 give or take, as most of my lenses produce their optical best at
that setting.
