Making a wedding formal is both the most
stressful part of a wedding for me (I'm not big into posed shots), but also
one of my favorites. It's often the first quiet moment the bride and
groom will have together on their wedding day. I try to be as
unobtrusive as possible, letting natural emotion take over the couple's
interaction and posture. It's also one of the only quiet moments I'll
have during the day as well, a moment I always feel privileged to share.
Technical Details: 1/640s at f/2.0, 85mm lens,
pixelroom conversion to B&W, RAW ISO 100
The setup for this shot was easy. A reflector was used to open the
shadows a bit. In the pixelroom, a layer mask was added to the flowers
and then the rest of the picture converted to black and white with custom
color conversion settings to lighten the blues in the background.
When shooting a wedding, I try to get to the venue in advance to scope out
the best place to shoot the formals - especially with respect to
backgrounds. This wedding took place along a river bank - the couple
positioned themselves down on a dock, and I shot down on them from an
embankment - this allowed me to exclude a rather boring sky, and via a wide
aperture, create a nice pattern with the foliage in the water.
