It was the last night of my summer vacation, and
my family and I were gathered for a final campfire. In the far corner on
the other side of my sister's lawn, I realized the two lawn chairs set
against the twilight conveyed the night's mood perfectly. Summer evenings
in Northern Michigan are so peaceful. This night, nature simply invited us
all to relax and enjoy the time we had.

To set the exposure for this image, I simply spot-metered the orange sky and
set a shutter speed that indicated the correct exposure. I choose f/16 both
for depth of field and optical sharpness. To illuminate the chairs, I took
my flash unit and manually triggered it three or four times at max power. I
was standing just to the left of the scene on another lawn chair with the
flash pointed down towards the base of these lawn chairs. I used the self
timer on the camera to give myself the time I needed to get into position
with the flash. In the pixelroom I added a standard amount of sharpening,
and I removed an unsightly power line that ran through the center of the
sky.
